There are many good reasons why SME service businesses usually love internet marketing when it works. Here are just a few of them:
- Once internet marketing is working, it provides new leads for you night and day, whilst you are busy doing what you love to do, namely helping your clients;
- Once you obtain the results (which can take time, particularly for competitive search engine terms), it is hard to knock you off your perch, so you keep on appearing at the top of the search engines (well the only one that matters at this moment in time – Google);
- You can outsource all of your internet marketing to another company and let them do all of the work for you whilst you simply look after all of the new leads generated for you; and
- When you are regularly found for search terms related to your service business by journalists researching an article, you will often be asked to provide a comment or write an article for them (providing you with more opportunities to promote your service business.
So how can you sprinkle this magic internet marketing dust over your website? How can you get to the top of Google for all high volume search terms related to your business? Well, the first rule in my Golden Rules of Marketing A Service Business applies here, that is this: “If it was easy, they would all be doing it“. Most service business owners are not necessarily lazy, they just do not understand marketing and do not take the time to understand it. They love to do what they do best and cater to their clients’ needs. So this means that they will not spend the time finding the best internet marketing company. They might dabble in some internet marketing, but usually will only pay £50 to £250 a month for an internet marketing service. They feel that this is a reasonable sum and also an investment which is not too large so if it does not produce results for them they will not worry too much about it. The trouble is, I can guarantee that at that level of investment in internet marketing, they will definitely NOT receive a return on their investment. Any decent Search Engine Marketing (SEM) or internet marketing business has to charge a proper amount for their services because to do internet marketing properly takes a large amount of time, every single month. Why?
They need to develop links back to your website from high quality websites. To find these high quality websites that are related to your specialist sector, they need to spend time researching the internet. They then probably need to approach 10 or 20 of them to actually find one who is willing to provide a link back to your website for one of two things. They will either want payment for that link, or they will want some unique content written for them. Either one of these costs money.
They will also need to analyse your competitors, to see what they have done to get to the top of Google. They can then learn from this and apply it to your website. This also takes time and money, so £50 – £250 is not going to cover this.
They will also need to go through every page of your service business website to change the Title Tags, Description Tags and Keyword tags. Changing your seo title tags and changes to the content on all of your pages is responsible for about 40% of your search engine marketing results, so these changes alone might produce some fast results for you. Once again, a cheap SEO company will not make these changes properly, or if they do they will not research the keywords to find the best ones for your business because the amount they are charging will simply not allow them to do so.
Look, I am not selling internet marketing services, so I have no vested interest, but I want you to understand more about search engine marketing so you can make the right decision for your service business. Once you understand that the amount needed to be invested is £1,250 to £1,500 you can make an informed decision about whether you should do it. However, it should be very easy for you to make this decision. Let’s say your average service sells for £500, you would only need to sell three more each month from internet marketing to make the service pay. But if your service is a monthly service, three more sales each month becomes 3, 6, 9, 12 extra sales each month. I have spent over £50,000 on search engine marketing services and I have received a very healthy return on my investment. I recommend search engine marketing for your business if it can provide you with new clients each month to easily recoup your investment. As I started off by saying at the beginning of this article, if you can generate clients on tap without having to do much of the legwork, it is very good for your business.
