I don’t quite know how or where to start with this one. It is quite bizarre, but if you can bear with me, I think it has a really sound business lesson contained within it.

Spell Out The Obvious In Your Business Services For Fast Growth

On the back of the packaging for some of Andrex’ products they actually spell out, in five simple steps, how you are supposed to clean up having been to the toilet.

Really!

I couldn’t quite believe my eyes. I mean, the last time I probably had this sort of lesson I would imagine that I was about 2 years old.

I will save you the ignominy of my repeating their wording for you in this email, but it really got me thinking. (If you want to see it, click here to see the image).

Andrex are spelling out, in a five-step process, something which I think most of us would think that we are pretty good at doing by now.

But isn’t this one of the biggest mistakes that we all make in business?

The knowledge that we have acquired, our skills, our expertise. We assume everyone else has the same level of knowledge or expertise too, when they really do not.

My advice.

Take a leaf out of Andrex’ book (sorry, I just could not resist that).

Take some time to spell out how something that you are a specialist in is done from start to finish.

I know some people are wary of this because they believe if they spell it out the client will go off and do it all without them.

In my experience, the opposite is true. Your clients see that you really are an expert and, seeing how hard it is to do what you do, ask you to do it for them.

You will clean up.
